- W118005087 abstract "Micro-end milling is one of the most versatile machining processes capable of producing micro-sized features on prismatic parts. With technological advancement in the recent years, micro-end milling has found novel applications in the miniaturized products such as microelectromechanical systems, biomedical instruments, and microfluidics. At microscale, the mechanism of material removal is technologically different from that at macroscale. Hence, micro-end milling is not entirely a scaled-down version of macro-end milling. Therefore, the micro-end milling process requires a number of challenges to be overcome for successful application. These challenges are mainly associated with differences in workpiece material response at the microscale, as well as relative size of the process geometry for a given workpiece material. In this chapter, the fundamental machining characteristics of micro-end milling are discussed with special focus on those associated with micro-scale material removal such as size effect, minimum chip thickness, and micro-burr formation. The theoretical concepts discussed are supported by the analytical and mathematical modeling work." @default.
