- W118143403 abstract "Abstract Among environmental factors, infectious agents have been suggested to play a fundamental role in the induction of an autoimmune response and, eventually, an autoimmune disease in genetically predisposed subjects. The mechanisms that link infectious agents and autoimmunity may be different, and molecular mimicry and activation or induction of apoptosis are two of the mechanisms involved. Parvovirus B19 induces clinical manifestations that are sometimes very similar to those of particular autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus and autoimmune erythroid aplasia. Although still highly controversial, the virus has been involved in the pathogenesis or in the flares of different autoimmune diseases through a mechanism of molecular mimicry or cell cytotoxicity. We describe here the contributions to the field of both our and other groups that have studied the link between parvovirus B19 infection and autoimmunity." @default.
