- W11816129 abstract "On Themes of Foreign Life: MORMONS IN FINLAND. (By M. Sturua. Izvestia, June 19, p. 4. Complete text:) The well-known British writer [A.] Conan Doyle wrote a tale called in [evidently A Study in Scarlet ]. The tale gives an account of Mormons who came to London and committed a whole series of crimes there. Secondly, they call themselves missionaries. Thirdly, attention is drawn to the fact that the overwhelming majority of American Mormon missionaries are people between the ages of 27 and 35 who are well versed not so much in religious as in military questions. Fourthly, many of them, such as, for example, the head of the Mormon missionaries, Henry Matis, have a long record of service in the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. ... The Mormons whom Conan Doyle once described were fairly indifferent to political questions. The Mormons who have flooded Finland are extremely interested in them. Under the guise of ... VOL. Ill, NO. 25 THE CURRENT DIGEST OF THE SOVIET PRESS PAGE 17 ... religious activity, American Mormon missionaries are engaged in war propaganda, kindling revanchist feelings, maintaining active liaison with representatives of outlawed fascist parties of Finland, etc., etc. ... There is yet another extremely important difference between the Mormons in London and the Mormons now flourishing in Finland. Whereas the Mormons of whom Conan Doyle wrote were pursued by the police, the Mormon missionaries now in Finland enjoy the complete support of the corresponding Finnish authorities while they collect information, the procuring of which is considered espionage under Finnish laws." @default.
