• W1182079553 abstract "It has been observed in tokamaks with Tungsten plasma facing components that Tungsten in core plasmas may lead to a radiative collapse due to excessive cooling. In a number of experiments, it has already been shown that sawtooth crashes can lead to an influx of impurities present at the plasma edge into the core region [1]. It is also known that sawteeth can take several forms, in particular when ECRH is applied [2]. An experiment has been carried out to study the effects of ECRH on (1,1) mode and Tungsten accumulation in ASDEX-Upgrade [3] during the first Eurofusion-MST1 campaign. Modeling sawtooth cycles was done with the non-linear full 3D MHD code XTOR [4]. The objective of this work is to validate the XTOR model by comparing with observations in ASDEX-Upgrade. The XTOR code models impurity transport during the sawtooth crash in a satisfactory manner in circular geometry [5]. A full scan of parameters has been performed to determine the conditions for which sawteeth appear in ASDEX-Upgrade geometry, given that elongation is strongly destabilizing [6]. Indeed, it is found that sawteeth appear for a β parameter smaller than the circular case, at around 2/3 of the ideal MHD threshold. Neoclassical transport is dominant for Tungsten and is in the Pfirsch-Schluter regime. A fluid model has thus been developed for Tungsten neoclassical transport, including thermal screening. This model has been implemented in XTOR. Synthetic Soft X-Ray emissivity is derived from the electron density, the electron temperature and the impurity density computed from the XTOR model. Soft X-Ray tomographic inversions have been performed for the referred ASDEX-Upgrade experiment. They show that a central emissivity hole rotates at a frequency close to 10kHz and is expelled during the sawtooth crashes [3].
