- W1188108151 abstract "Publisher Summary Antibiotic production is a dispensable function of the producing cell, which is a characteristic of plasmic-borne traits, such as sex, metal resistance, pathogenicity, and drug resistance. The pattern of antibiotic production in any medium is strongly influenced by the growth rate of the producing organism. Contact of aurodox-producing Streptomyces goldiniensis with its antibiotic is necessary for the expression of resistance to aurodox. Aurodox inhibits both protein synthesis and the release of elongation factor Tu from the ribosomes in the producing organism. Mutants resistant to growth inhibition by aurodox are also resistant to feedback inhibition of aurodox biosynthesis by this antibiotic. Cross-regulation by histidine in B. subtilis is mediated through tryptophan. Both histidine and anthranilic acid stimulate tryptophan production, which represses the synthesis of all enzymes of the tryptophan pathway. In the tryptophan auxotroph, elevated levels of anthranilate synthetase divert chorismic acid to anthranilate and keep the intracellular pool level of the branch point intermediate sufficiently low so that the chloramphenicol branch pathway is not induced." @default.
