- W1190408229 abstract "All medullated primary afferent fibers in the spinal cord are depolarized by suitable conditioning volleys, and this depolarization reduces their excitatory effectiveness and results in the inhibition known as “presynaptic inhibition.” This presynaptic depolarization that is responsible for presynaptic inhibition is also manifested both in the P wave of the cord dorsum and in the dorsal root potential. The postsynaptic inhibitory action of impulses from the flexor reflex afferents is explained in this chapter. Presynaptic depolarization has a characteristic slow time course—latency about 4 ms, summit at about 20 ms, and a total duration of at least 300 ms. The brief duration of the dorsal root reflex is attributed to accommodation. Several afferent volleys in quick succession considerably increase the depolarization, and potentials in excess of 1 mV are regularly observed in the fibers in the cord dorsum. When employing the usual procedures of testing by a monosynaptic reflex, presynaptic inhibition appears to be more potent than postsynaptic inhibition." @default.
