- W1191591486 abstract "This chapter discusses the biosynthesis of labeled L-ascorbic acid in intact plant tissues and procedure for labeling plant tissues and for isolating L-ascorbic acid. Studies of L-ascorbic acid biosynthesis, in which specifically labeled sugars are used, have revealed that higher plants, unlike animals, form L-ascorbic acid from D-glucose or D-galactose by a path of conversion that conserves the 6-carbon chain and oxidizes C-1 of hexose to form the carboxyl group of L-ascorbic acid. When specifically labeled D-glucurono-γ-lactone or D-galacturonate or their corresponding C-1 reduced products—L-gulono-γ-lactone or L-galactono-γ-lactone—is provided, conversion to L-ascorbic acid proceeds with retention of the preformed carboxyl function as C-1 of L-ascorbic acid. The pathway from D-glucose to D-glucuronic acid and D-galacturonic acid in plants involves a path of conversion in which the 6-carbon chain of D-glucose is conserved but is oxidized at C-6, the two L-ascorbic acid pathways of plants appear to be mutually exclusive pathways." @default.
