- W1192902153 abstract "The association between cyanobacteria and sponges is considered to be the most primitive in the Animal Kingdom. However, little is known about the identity and phylogeny of cyanobacterial symbionts in sponges. The vast microbial diversity present within sponges, represents today, a huge challenge to understanding the structure and function of these consortia microorganisms-sponge. This association has resulted also in an endless source of bioactive compounds of enormous relevance in the field of marine biotechnology. The aim of the present study was to evaluate changes in the structure and composition of the cyanobacterial community over 105 days in natural seawater, and 30 days in artificial seawater in the sponge Hymeniacidon perlevis. First, to confirm the presence of cyanobacteria, the quantification of photosynthetic pigments was performed. Molecular analysis was based primarily on the amplification of the 16S rRNA, DGGE technique, cloning and then sequencing. Quantification of photosynthetic pigments showed a minor community of cyanobacteria associated with Hymeniacidon perlevis, with fluctuations in the abundance over time. Molecular analysis showed a diverse community of cyanobacteria in the host Hymeniacidon perlevis and a stable structure over time. The predominance of species of Nostocaceae family during the study, suggests a high specificity of these species with Hymeniacidon perlevis, establishing a true symbiotic relationship and sustaining a theory of co-evolution between these." @default.
