- W1193716742 abstract "I began using teleconferencing tools as an undergraduate at Rider University. We had a cutting edge program that paired undergraduate creative writing students with writing students at local middle and high school students. Once a week we met via videoconference over a LAN line. Waiting for the dial up to connect and testing the camera and mic were always the most nerve-wracking moments. But as long as technology cooperated, we could connect through our shared interest in writing. It was collaborative and messy and it was learning.Over the twenty years since I participated in that program, technology has, as expected, advanced. Teleconferences now allow us to share our desktops or collaborate using a virtual whiteboard. We can record our virtual meetings for review or to share with those who could not be present. Our smart phones and tablets allow us to teleconference with anyone anywhere using Face Time or Skype. The possibilities for videoconferencing are endless.Which is perhaps why it is most disheartening that many webinars fall short of their potential.Let me be clear, my concern is not with the content. Like many of my colleagues, I have taken advantage of online webinars as a more cost-effective means of professional development. The presenters are notable scholars in our field. Their content, as expected, has been solid. My concern is with the delivery. Many times I have met the presenter previously. Their face-to-face workshop or conference presentation was impressive. I beg and borrow to cobble together the webinar fee so that my faculty and staff can enjoy the same a-ha moments of brilliance. But the presentation falls flat.I can understand the challenge of presenting to a silent audience. It is difficult to track audience attention or know if there is an idea that needs to be explained differently or a topic that can be glossed over. Activities you plan might not easily translate to the online format. Technology may not cooperate. The list of potential pitfalls is endless. Still, with all the advancements in technology, I believe that we do not have to succumb to those webinar worries. If you are asked to facilitate a webinar, I have a few suggestions to help you and your audience have a successful professional development experience.1. Learn the platform you will be using. Each platform is slightly different and knowing how to make it do what you want it to do is the first challenge. If you have never used the platform before, ask for a practice room a day or so in advance to learn where everything is.2. Learn what you will be responsible for. CRLA PA/NJ's annual webinar has three webinar hosts: the presenter who needs full control to manipulate the presentation, a tech person to address any tech issues that come up for the speaker or the participants, and a third person to capture any questions that are posted during the presentation and ask the speaker when session opens for Q&A. …" @default.
