- W119420906 abstract "Objective: To delineate the prevalenee, etiologies, clinieal manifestations, eomplieations, and management of autonomie dysreflexia in individuals who sustained spinal eord injury (SCI) as ehildren.Method: Retrospective ehart review.Participants: All individuals with 2: T6 SCI who were injured at 13 years of age or younger and who were eared for at one pediatrie SCI program.Outcome Measures: Outeome measures ineluded prevalenee, etiologie factors, and symptoms of autonomie dysreflexia as doeumented in both inpatient and outpatient reeords. Blood pressure and heart rate for observed episodes of autonomie dysreflexia also were reeorded. Results: Of 1 21 partieipants who met the study eriteria, 62 (51%) had experieneed autonomie dysreflexia. The most eommon eauses of dysreflexia were urologie (7 5%) and bowel impaction (18%), and the distribution of eausative factors were similar in the 3 age ranges (0-5 years, 6-1 3 years, and 14-21 years). For all age groups, the most eommon symptoms were faeial flushing (43%), headaehes (24%), sweating (15%), and piloerection (14%). However, headaehes (5%) and piloerection (0%), were uncommonly seen in ehildren 5 years of age and younger. For observed episodes of autonomie dysreflexia, the majority (93%) demonstrated blood pressure eievatians eonsistent with published guidelines, 50% experieneed taehyeardia , and 1 2.5% experieneed bradyeardia. Autonomie dysreflexia was signifieantly more eommon in individuals with eomplete lesions andin those who were injured between 6 and 1 3 years old eompared with those injured at a younger age. lndividuals with eervieal injuries were not at signifieantly higher risk of dysreflexia than were those with upper thoraeie Ievei injuries. However, among individuals with eomplete lesions, autonomie dysreflexia was signifieantly more eommon in those with tetraplegia. Conclusion: Autonomie dysreflexia has a similar prevalenee in pediatrie-onset SCI eompared with the adult SCI population. Dysreflexia is diagnosed less eommonly in infants and presehool-aged ehildren, and these 2 populations may present with more subtle signs and symptoms." @default.
