- W119764083 abstract "Publisher Summary Behavioral scientists can contribute greatly to the understanding of psychological issues related to the medical dimensions of HIV infections and AIDS. Because medical knowledge and attitudes about HIV infections and AIDS are evolving rapidly, information about this disease changes, expands, and is disproved continually. Complex interactions exist between the biological, psychological, and social levels of functioning with the disease. The chapter examines psychological aspects of AIDS, concentrating primarily on its relations to hope. High-hope people with HIV infections or AIDS are able to seek alternative pathways to reach their prediagnosis goals that decreases distress and increases positive psychological adjustment. These people realize that there are other routes to achieve their goals and remain flexible in their approaches to original or substitute goals. High-hope people, after diagnosis, are also able to generate new goals that are appropriate for their changed health statuses. Thus, high-hope individuals may even be able to call upon these resources in a manner that others cannot when faced with extreme distress. Hopeful thinking can open up a new domain of goals as well as the determination to get there. There is a rich and satisfying life that remains for the person diagnosed as HIV positive, and hopeful thinking provides a vehicle for making that journey more productive and enjoyable." @default.
