- W119844512 abstract "Calcitonin was named for its ability to regulate the “tone” of serum calcium, and has been used in the treatment of disorders characterized by increased bone resorption. Calcitonin has been shown to inhibit bone resorption directly, unlike parathyroid hormone (PTH), which requires the presence of osteoblasts for its effect on the osteoclast. The effects of calcitonin on isolated osteoclasts include the gradual slowing of cell motility, decreased pseudopodial protrusion and retraction, decreased margin ruffling, decreased cell migration, and reduction of the cell surface to 60% of the original cell area. Although the major effect of calcitonin is to inhibit bone resorption, calcitonin may also enhance osteoblastic bone formation in vitro and in vivo. Calcitonin also increases renal 1-α-hydroxylase activity. Calcitonin has rapid antihypercalcemic action, is secreted in response to elevations in serum calcium concentration, and has a half-life of minutes. Nasal calcitonin has been shown to be as safe and effective as parenteral calcitonin in preventing and treating postmenopausal bone loss with few of the problems associated with parenteral calcitonin." @default.
