- W120147506 abstract "Long-distance calls are important for many animal species to communicate messages related to reproduction. However, sound transmission over long distances, with preservation of all essential acoustic detail, is constrained by the environment, and physical constraints vary by habitat type. As conveying a message successfully can have important fitness consequences, habitat-dependent sound transmission can shape animal signals over evolutionary time. Therefore, the design of many long-distance calls reveals evidence of acoustic adaptations that allow animals to cope under difficult signaling conditions. Furthermore, some species show remarkable solutions to avoid signal degradation and some even benefit from the environmental impact on their signals by exploiting acoustic phenomena such as resonance features and reverberations. The article also briefly discusses whether there is any evidence for environmental selection on acoustic communication in humans." @default.
