- W120252610 abstract "The production of lymphokines by T-cells is a well-recognized phenomenon. B-cells, nonspecifically activated by certain mitogens, can produce lymphokines. Lymphokines or substances with similar biologic and physicochemical characteristics are released by the cultures of replicating nonlymphoid cells or may appear following the in vitro or in vivo infection of nonlymphoid cells by certain viruses. This chapter illustrates the macrophage migration inhibitory activity in supernatants of SV-40-infected African Green monkey kidney (AGMK) cell cultures. Lymphokines or lymphokine-like substances are released by the cultures of replicating nonlymphoid cells or may appear following the infection of nonlymphoid cells by certain viruses. Even though they have not been isolated and fully characterized, these mediators seem to be different from interferons. Cytokine production is a general biological phenomenon, which may play a role in host defense, and lymphokines represent a restricted set of cytokines produced by one class of cells, the lymphocytes, and activated in certain unique ways. Cytokines seem to have no species specificity at all as chemotactic factors obtained from chicken and monkey cells are active on rabbit macrophages and neutrophils, while migration inhibitory factor (MIF) obtained from human, monkey, and mouse cells is active on guinea pig macrophages and human lymphocytes." @default.
