- W120335844 abstract "This chapter, based on a study in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, which has been the site of insurgent political violence since 1989, examines the potential for psychosocial programming to bring about social change. The study used semi-structured interviews and focus group discussion to explore the impact of selected psychosocial programmes. These were selected to include different sectors of psychosocial intervention and to give representation to population groups differing along lines of gender, ethnicity, age and nature of “trauma”. Three programmes were selected for in-depth study, data was obtained from beneficiaries and staff, and five additional programmes were studied through interviews with staff alone. The research protocol was partly based on the Psychosocial Assessment of Development and Humanitarian Assistance (PADHI) model of psychosocial well-being. The data on the perceived impact of these programmes was subjected to thematic analysis to discern themes relevant to development, peacebuilding and social transformation. Themes of economic well-being, education and growth of human capital emerged as significant in the domain of development; finding “inner” peace, repair of social fabric, improving the human rights environment, facilitating dialogue and reconciliation, and addressing youth alienation emerged as the themes relevant to peacebuilding; and social justice in terms of class and gender, citizenship practices that deepen democracy, the expansion of civil society, measures to bring human security concerns in line with international instruments, and the issue of intergenerational shifts were themes relevant to social transformation. Additional findings concern the factors contributing to resilience, the crucial importance of environmental supports in facilitating repair and the fact that adversity has actualised the potential for social activism and leadership in some." @default.
