- W120592495 abstract "CTf he subject of this essay is the questionWhether it is better for a man to Ls marry or to remain sing le ?-dcbated by male characters in four well-known early modern texts: Rabelais' s Tiers Livre (1546), Moliere' s L'Ecole des femmes (1662) and Le Mariage force (1664), and Boileau' s Satire X (1694).2 These four sets of dialogues Panurge with several interlocutors, Arnolphe with Chrysalde, Sganarelle with Geronimo, and Boileau' s je with Alcippe frame the question in different ways and have different goals, yet belong to the same misogamous tradition of humor and satire and refer explicitly or implicitly to their predecessors.3 While I have chosen to focus primarily on the form these querelles des hommes take on the question of whether to marry or not, they provide a fascinating and complex framework of topoi which could guide an understanding of the problems and fears and rivalries of those men who either choose or refuse marriage in the larger socio-cultural context of early modern France. The exploration of this context is, however, regrettably and necessarily beyond the modest scope of this essay, which will limit itself to an analysis of the form the question can take, the answers it allows, the querelle itself, and the winners and losers of the debate. I will conclude with a brief discussion of some general issues raised by my reading of the texts." @default.
