- W120717582 abstract "Acknowledgement: The views expressed in this article do not necessarily reflect the views of the South African Nursing Council. Overview and Research Methodology of Distance Bridging Course Introduction Nurses are the backbone of the health care delivery system in South Africa. Continual nurse training is essential to meet the present and future dynamic health needs of the ever-growing population of South Africa. The accepted and approved method of conducting basic nurse education and training programmes is on a full time basis. Student intake numbers have been reduced due to a down sizing of hospital staff numbers with an ensuing freezing of posts, making it impracticable for staff to be released for full time study purposes. Budgetary constraints have further reduced the number of posts available for the appointment of students on a full-time basis. The advent of the auxiliary and enrolled nurse courses in 1960 has created a rapidly growing market for further education because this cadre of nurse is keen to upgrade their training and advance to a level of professional nurse. At the beginning of 1997 applications were made to the SAINC for the implementation of distant learning for basic nurse education and training programmes for the Bridging Course (from enrolled nurse to General nurse R683). The SAINC granted permission for the running of the latter programmes as pilot projects. The SAINC sent a delegation on 5 and 6 December 1997 and 3 and 4 November 1998 respectively to do inspections of the institutions who were engaged in the aforementioned pilot projects. The inspection addressed all the components of the programme so as to obtain a comprehensive overview of the application of distant learning as a teaching strategy for the bridging programme. The inspectorate was introduced to the programme and was assured of the following: An employer's declaration for the Bridging programme was signed wherein they undertook to rotate their staff members as required for the programme and to allow them to practice as student nurses for the two year duration of the programme. The findings of the inspectorate amongst others were: Student responses in both institutions: * a positive and enthusiastic attitude * the highlighting of the holistic approach to nursing became a reality * the preceptors were committed to providing guidance * the self-directed study in modules such as for anatomy and physiology posed a problem * the case study method for inclusion of the entire theoretical component was unclear * they found the self-study programme to be an enriching experience that made a significant contribution to their professional growth and development * they expressed their concern about the dual role that they play i.e. enrolled nurse and student nurses' role * they felt that the course material was too much and in excess of the SANC requirement. Strengths of the Programmeme in One of the Institutions * pre-registration counseling * student selection was based on set criteria and the results * student support and accompaniment was better than satisfactory * there was effective communication between the course co-ordinator and the recipient of the programme * employers had a will to support, guide and care for the students * formative and summative practical evaluation results were well above average because of the minimum standard demanded by the Education and Training directorate Weaknesses of the Programmeme * the case study method for the inclusion of the entire theoretical component was unclear * the programme co-ordinator was not actively involved in the compilation of the curriculum and the course material * there seems to be inconsistency in contact sessions between the institutions * the curriculum is not adapted to the module system that is being implemented but reflects the block system * workbook not in line with the level of the students' training * a lack of infrastructure with regard to the placement of students. …" @default.
