- W120772903 abstract "The purpose of this Special Issue is to instigate further debate about property, commoning and commons. In this first volume, movement, which has autonomously constituted itself by articulating their social values in GNU General Public License, is presented as an example of a commons, a commoning community, and critically analysed through lens of property.Doing so reveals that philosophical and political principles underlying and wider Culture movements fail to address threat of enclosure at most fundamental level, namely in material realm. Without confronting ownership of land, its resources, and means of production, and Culture movements remain liable to threat of enclosure. After all, all immaterial things have a material base (space, energy, labour, resources, distribution) and exclusive control over these material underpinnings is de facto control over immaterial goods that may spring from their potential. It is consequently argued in Chapter 1 – Free Culture in Context: and Politics of Software – that without a reorientation towards concepts of property and an alignment with social movements that struggle to resist enclosure in material realm, politics of and Culture reinforce existing private property rights, thereby ultimately serving capital interests. In this way, and Culture can be said to engage in “capitalist commoning”.The insights that this analysis provides are built upon in Chapter 2 – Properties of Property: A Jurisprudential Analysis – with a view to re-animating language and thinking around property in general, thus opening debate for wider reconfigurations of property relations in all realms.Chapter 3 – Free as Property – contextualises political economy of (and Culture) within a wider analysis of property relations.Reanimating language of property is useful because in critical political economy – and discourses of the left and social movements in general – term is mostly used to develop critiques of social effects (outcomes/consequences) of existing, capitalist property relations. Little has been said about alternative configurations of property, but an analysis of in these terms provides an example of a successful autonomous (re)configuration. With this Special Issue, therefore, we seek to open up debate about property, commoning and commons by beginning to think constructively: with a conceptual analysis of property as framework how can we better understand existing and emerging commons, and how can we give shape to commons in future? Essentially we are asking: how can we – using language of property – decode social relations that are defined by measure of capital and recode them in spirit of autonomous and other ways of commoning, based on other values and anti-capitalist practices?" @default.
