- W120856959 abstract "This chapter describes the chemistry of the title compounds, excluding tetrazines, pentazines, and fused-ring systems with a bridgehead nitrogen atom, which are covered in other chapters. The most common classes of compounds with which this chapter is concerned are thiatriazines, oxathiadiazines, tetroxanes, and tetrathianes. The chapter is based on the literature which appeared between late 1995 and mid-2006. The first three sections describe the theoretical and experimental methods used to resolve structural and thermodynamic aspects, including stability and conformation. The discussion on X-ray crystallographic studies is the dominant section since the types of compounds under discussion often lack contiguous NMR-responsive nuclei and X-ray studies can be critical in confirming the exact connectivity of the atoms constituting the core heterocycle. The next three sections are devoted to systematic discussion of reactivities, both of the core heterocycles and that of ring substituents. The discussion is broken up into areas including thermolysis and photolysis, oxidations, reductions, electrophilic and nucleophilic attacks, and rearrangements: first for fully conjugated rings, second for nonconjugated rings, and third for ring substituents. The subsequent two sections deal with synthesis of the title compounds. The first section describes syntheses from acyclic precursors, classified by the number of ring atoms contributed by each component, and the second section details syntheses by transformation of another ring. The following section critically compares (where possible) synthetic methods for each class of compound, particularly with regard to availability/ease of preparation of precursors, how readily substituents can be varied, and yield. The final section contains a discussion on important compounds and their applications, including (potential) uses in human health (e.g., antimalarial 1,2,4,5-tetroxanes) and crop protection (e.g., herbicidal 1,2,4,6-thiatriazines), food flavoring mixtures (e.g., 1,2,4,5-tetrathianes), and useful industrial processes and products." @default.
