- W121556566 abstract "1253 Objectives: The purpose of this study was to find functional imaging evidence for a previously described neurophysiological model for cerebral activation during attention tasks such as meditation and relaxation techniques. Methods: Three experienced pracitioners in the Transcendental Meditation relaxation technique were recruited to undergo 18F fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) to determine changes in cerebral glucose metabolism during the meditation compared to their baseline state. Each subject was injected at baseline with 5-8 mCi of FDG and scanned 30 minutes later for 30 minutes. Immediately following the baseline scan, the subjects then performed the relaxation technique for 20 minutes. Approximately 5 minutes after beginning this technique, the subjects were injected with 10 mCi of FDG and scanned 30 minutes later for 30 minutes. FDG uptake was determined for regions of interest for both cortical and subcortical structures and normalized to the average whole brain activity. The percentage change between the relaxation technique and baseline was then determined. Results: The results from this study revealed a number of significant findings in spite of the limited sample size (see table). When the relaxation technique was compared to baseline, we observed significant increases (p Conclusions: Overall, these results show measurable changes in cerebral glucose metabolism that occur in the brain during relaxation techniques. These changes are consistent with those found in related attention focusing tasks in which there were significant increases in the frontal regions, particularly the prefrontal cortex and the superior parietal lobes. Interestingly, the decreases in the thalami and hippocampus distinguished this technique and may be attributable to the relaxation component." @default.
