- W121603016 abstract "Abstract Modern buildings have large windows and glass facades in order to give desired indoor–outdoor contact and daylighting. These glazings are challenging for the buildings' eco-efficiency and often let in or out too much energy, which needs to be compensated by energy-guzzling cooling or heating. In particular, the need for cooling has increased dramatically in recent years. Thin surface coatings applied to transparent substrates can do much to improve the situation, as surveyed in this chapter, and coatings with spectral selectivity can lead to glazings with good thermal insulation and capability to transmit mainly visible light or, alternatively, across the full solar spectrum. Chromogenic glazings—based on thermochromism or electrochromism—can regulate the inflow of visible light and solar energy between widely separated limits and achieve further energy efficiency. In addition, the new fenestration technologies are able to improve the indoor comfort." @default.
