- W121610981 abstract "The human brain is supplied with blood through carotid arteries and vertebral arteries. Ultrasonic measurements often show considerable disproportions in the flow through the left and right vertebral artery. These flow value proportions determined on the basis of the Hagen-Poiseuille equation for known inner diameters of arteries do not correspond to those calculated on the basis of ultrasonic measurement results. Strong disproportions in the flow or even disappearance of the blood flow in one of vertebral arteries does not have to result from pathological changes but can follow from physical phenomena that occur during the flow. Vertebral arteries are a special kind of blood vessels that can originate at different distances from the aortic ostium (aortic valve) in various places of the artery system, can have different lengths, their geometry is strongly spatial, they can merge at different angles but they almost always join to form one large basilar artery. A pulsatile flow and a complex geometry of the vertebral artery system can give rise to wave phenomena that can inhibit the flow in one artery, and can even lead to its disappearance in the extreme case. On the basis of averaged values of geometrical dimensions of arteries, three models of their geometry in the human body have been generated and the inner diameter of vessels have been altered within the range of 2 – 6 mm, the same as that measured during the ultrasonic examination, for each model. Non-structural computational grids have been generated, proper boundary and initial conditions have been defined to conduct numerical simulations of the flow of the model liquid whose parameters correspond to blood. The results of simulations and calculations have been compared for individual combinations of diameters of vertebral arteries, not taking into account the anatomical type of their geometry." @default.
