- W121773737 abstract "The disintegration of the Soviet Union and the collapse of the old regional order in the Asia Pacific at the end of the Cold War brought about a fundamental change in the structure of international relations especially via territorial conflicts in the South China Sea. Multilateral cooperation in the South China Sea suffered for the past two decades especially because China is perceived as the dominant actor, the focal point of authority as well as the aspiring hegemony in the Southeast Asia region. Despite recent rhetorical evidences of China’s willingness to develop the Spratlys multilaterally, China’s realist tradition of aggression proves the contrary as actions differ from various security policy statements. This ambiguous position [interpreted as a strategic diplomatic posturing] underscores the conflicting bureaucratic agendas of decision-makers in China’s foreign and domestic policies and further threatens China’s realist ideology in the Spratly Islands dispute, creating an imbalance of power that makes China’s stand appear quite vague. Thus this paper seeks to reflect the conspiracy theories at work in the dispute, as well as identify the ideological/theoretical shifts that must occur in international relations for there to be a possibility of multilateral cooperation among all the claimants to the Spratly islands. This study may be categorised as a single case study reviewing China’s position using content analysis methodology, a research method that makes valid debatable inferences from texts." @default.
