- W121874465 abstract "This chapter presents the experimental data of the structure–function relationship of integrin receptors and summarizes the diverse structures and growing number of integrin subunits. Integrin receptors are a family of transmembrane glycoproteins that interact with a wide variety of ligands including extracellular matrix glycoproteins, complement, and membrane proteins. Integrins are noncovalently linked heterodimers with distinct α and β subunits. The integrin α subunits each have a large extracellular domain with three or four putative divalent cation binding domains and consist of two disulfide-linked polypeptides termed a heavy and light chain. All integrin subunits contain a single transmembrane segment followed by a carboxyl terminal cytoplasmic domain of varying length. The general feature of all integrin receptors is that they provide a transmembrane linkage between the extracellular matrix (ECM) and the cytoplasm. The structure and relationship of individual domains of integrins are discussed within the context of their overall function, beginning with ECM binding and progressing to the inside of the cell." @default.
