- W122446377 abstract "The normal activation of muscles is highly compromised in Parkinson’s disease (PD). Antagonistic muscles tend to co—contract during movement (Wiesendanger and Ruegg, 1978), while muscles are rigid at rest (Selby, 1990). Two (non mutually exclusive) peripheral mechanisms have been suggested to underlie these symptoms: (a) increased excitability of spinal motor units (Cantello et al., 1995), and (b) abnormal reciprocal inhibition in the spinal cord (Bathien and Rondot, 1977; Hayashi et al., 1988; Lelli et al., 1991; Delwaide et al., 1996; Meunier et al., 2000). However, both of these hypotheses are still under debate. Moreover, some studies have argued that cortico-motor neuron transmission is largely unchanged in PD (Dick et al., 1984). This implies, as is widely accepted, that the source for abnormal rigidity lies mainly within the central nervous system (CNS) upstream from the spinal cord. The question is where?" @default.
