- W123093877 abstract "I was aware of poetry from a very early age. My maternal grandfather was Rosario Previti (1882-1967), a poet and translator who worked in both Sicilian and Italian. He was also the American correspondent for Don Giovanni, a small Sicilian newspaper. My grandfather wrote mostly in the standard hendecasyllable of Italian verse, though he also used some shorter lyric measures on occasion. He published two books of poetry half a century apart, one in 1910 and one in 1960. As a writer for Don Giovanni, he produced satiric prose commentary on the contemporary scene. I inherited two things from my grandfather, poetically speaking: a solicitude for the tropes and figures of rhetoric, and a penchant for satire. These proclivities have frequently set me at odds with my contemporaries. Mainstream poets tend to follow a poetic praxis that distrusts ornament, and that is uncomfortable with the idea of giving offense to readers. In contrast, I want a poem to be as aesthetically polished as possible, and I am unconcerned with audience reaction to it. I began writing poetry in 1964, following in the high modernist tradition of T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, and Wallace Stevens. For many years I wrote free verse, and still do so on occasion. It remains my settled conviction that high modernism has produced some of the greatest poetry of the twentieth century, but over the last two decades I have been increasingly drawn back to the fixed forms and metrical symmetry that I had first learned from my grandfather. There were two reasons for this shift. First, the fixed forms and meters have an intrinsic beauty and aptness that satisfy the human desire for orderly arrangement and design. They are able to do this, I believe, because they are the end result of centuries of development. The hexameter line, for instance, goes back not just to Homer but to the Indo-European period. In short, these forms constitute our oldest poetic inheritance, and since they work so well there is no reason to give them up. My second reason grew naturally out of this first one. I had gradually come to see that a factor (and perhaps the crucial factor) in the success of the high modernists was that they had all been trained" @default.
