- W123238280 abstract "The interactions between healthy sapwood and decay-causing fungi were investigated in Acer saccharinum. Wound associated compartmentalization wall 4 barriers comprised a suberized band of traumatic axial parenchyma tissue, morphologically distinct from the normal xylem. This resembled a similar tissue previously described from oak, although in A. saccharinum suberization was not histochemically detectable unless associated phenolic material was first extracted. Reaction zones, which could develop at the decay margin in fully differentiated wood in any axial plane, were not associated with any major anatomical changes, but were accompanied by an accumulation of soluble and insoluble phenolic compounds. Two visibly distinct types of reaction zorie were observed, one of which contained an accumulation of insoluble materials and appeared as a green li ne at the decay margin. The other lacked insoluble deposi ts and, whilst initially colourless, rapidly developed an orange coloration on exposure to air. Both types of reaction zone could occur adjacently along the same decay margin. Suberization responses were not associated with either category of reaction zone. In both green and orange reaction zones, and in the wall 4 barrier tissue, the accumulation of phenolic compounds was demonstrated both histochemically and by extraction. One of these compounds, which was present in all three regions, had phytoalexin-like properties, since it was inhibitory to the wood decaying fungus Ganoderma adspersum, in vitro. The role of these reaction zones in the containment of decay in living wood is discussed." @default.
