- W12369149 abstract "The poor maize (Zea mays L.) yields (<500 kg/ha) observed in western Kenya are mainly explained in terms of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) deficiencies and possible aluminum (Al) and manganese (Mn) toxicities which are associated with the widespread soil acidity in the region. Although most farmers plant improved or high quality maize seeds in order to get high yields, they hardly apply fertilisers to boost productivity. We picked this entry point and field tested five maize genotypes in relation to their responses to N, P, and lime additions. The genotypes included two local landraces from KARI Genebank, two standards of comparison from CIMMYT, Mexico (tolerant and sensitive to soil acidity) and one Kenyan highland moderately tolerant popular hybrid, H 614D. The CIMMYT genotypes were Cimcali 97 BA Chap 1 ASA 4 (tolerant standard) and Cimcali 97 ASA 3 – 1 (susceptible standard). The KARI’s landraces were 2 A1 – Vihiga (tolerant) and 306 A – Kilifi (susceptible). All genotypes were tested side-by-side at two on-farm sites, Bumala and Kuinet with acid (pH <5.5) and low Olsen P (<5 mg P/kg) soils, in 2003 against lime was added at 4 t/ha, phosphorus at 26 kg P/ha and nitrogen at 75 kg N/ha (the FURP-KARI recommendation). There was also a combination of lime, P and N at similar rates. The maize genotypes differed significantly (p<0.05) in their root architecture, yields and overall responses to soil amendments. Lime and P stimulated root growth and grain yield. Lime stimulated the performance of maize, whether tolerant or sensitive to acid soils. Thus genotypic variability adaptation to acid soils and soil fertility management can be exploited to achieve high yields at low input costs. The second year (2004) field study investigated responses of the highest yielding (4.73 t/ha) maize hybrid, H 614 D, to nitrogen added from 0 – 75 kg N/ha, phosophorus (0 – 120 kg P/ha) and lime at 0 – 6 t/ha, the larger input ranges. Yields of this hybrid varied with site. Overall, P use efficiency (from inputs) was highest from genotypes tolerant to soil acidity. Lime raised the pH of soils." @default.
