- W123930013 abstract "Acetylcholine (ACh) is an important excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system (CNS) of insects while neurotransmission at the neuromuscular junction is glutamatergic in this group of animals. Components of the cholinergic system, including choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) and acetyl- cholinesterase (AChE), are abundant and widely distributed in the insect CNS. The vital significance of this transmitter system in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster is underscored by the fact that null mutants in the genes encod- ing ChAT or AChE are embryonic lethals (for review, see RESTIFO and WHITE 1990). Binding studies with nicotinic and muscarinic ligands have suggested that the majority of cholinergic receptors is of nicotinic pharmacology (BREER and SATTELLE 1987). Nicotinic ACh receptors (nAChRs) are widely distributed in synaptic neuropil regions of the nervous system and are thought to act primarily as postsynaptic receptors. They constitute major targets for distinct insecticides such as the neonicotinoid imidacloprid and related compounds. Despite this vital importance of nAChRs in the insect nervous system, we still lack knowledge of the quaternary structure of any invertebrate receptor complex and appropriate expression systems that could be used for an efficient evaluation of its physiology and pharmacology." @default.
