- W124026476 abstract "Publisher Summary It is generally known that vitamin A nutrition is influenced by a wide variety of factors, including the nature of the diet, and that a number of dietary materials affect the metabolism of carotene and vitamin A. In view of the extensive usage of urea in ruminant feeds in recent years, the scarcity of research concerning implications of urea usage and vitamin. The fact that urea has been used extensively as a source of dietary nitrogen for ruminants in recent years without any apparent deleterious effect upon the vitamin A nutritional status of the animals has been regarded as suggestive that no such deleterious effect results from the feeding of urea under conditions of practical production. A series of original experiments with sheep at the Oklahoma station confirmed the indirect evidence from the field of livestock production. A later series of experiments at the Illinois station, involving sheep, cattle, and rats fed urea under a variety of conditions has yielded rather conclusive evidence that the feeding of urea even at excessive intake levels has no noticeable adverse effect upon either the mobilization or storage of vitamin A. Results from the Illinois study suggest that dietary urea reduced the adverse effect of dietary nitrate upon the liver storage of vitamin A in both sheep and rats." @default.
