- W124138263 abstract "Microsomes derived from smooth endoplasmic reticulum of animal and plant cells contain a mixed function oxidase which oxygenates a variety of xenobiotics. In higher plants this can lead to the inactivation of a wide range of herbicides. NADPH and oxygen are required for the process together with cytochrome P450 and, perhaps, cytochrome b5. Flavoprotein reductases transfer electrons from NAD(P)H to the cytochromes. The xenobiotic binds close to the haem of cytochrome P450 and oxygen binds to the iron of its haem, where it is activated by reduction with electrons transferred from NADPH. The oxygenase activity of plant microsomes varies with the age of the plant and can be increased by treating plants with inducers, such as phenobarbitone, trans-cinnamic acid, geraniol or the herbicides 2, 4-D and monuron. Herbicide tolerance in some plants is associated with increased cytochrome P450 content and oxygenase activity. Cytochrome P450 dependent metabolism of herbicides can be prevented by treatment with diagnostic reagents, including CO and 1-aminobenzotriazole, which form complexes with the haem of cytochrome P450." @default.
