The presenceof this beetle is of concern for several reasons.Scolytus kirschiil/Ig is a serious pest of elms,capable of killing healthy trees, resulting inconsiderable economic impact. There alsoexists the possibility that the beetle mayundergo a host switch to indigenous trees,with potentially serious ecological consequences.Furthermore, the beetle is capable ofbeing the vector of the pathogens responsiblefor Dutch elm disease (DED), Ophiostoma ulmiand Ophiostoma novo-ulmi. None of the treesthat we inspected in Stellenbosch exhibitedsymptoms or signs of DED. Isolations frominfested host material likewise failed to detectthese pathogens. Nonetheless, the damageto the trees by the beetles alone was sufficientto cause tree death. Future directions forresearch and management of the beetle in itsnew environment are discussed." @default.
