- W124733449 abstract "The biological pump in the ocean has a strong impact on the pCO 2 of the atmosphere, potentially acting as a feedback to future changes in climate or ocean pH. However, the characterization of the strength of the biological pump today is less than ideal: there is a general discrepancy between direct measurements with sediment traps versus estimates based on bottle incubations, satellite data, and models. As a result, our ability to predict the future response of the biological pump is embryonic. Changes in primary production and calcification rates, which could impact sinking fluxes through changes in ballasting and marine snow aggregation, can be envisioned, but making reliable quantitative predictions is still elusive. The impact on atmospheric CO 2 depends on how the ocean carbon and nutrient cycles respond to the change. The goal of this chapter is to synthesize the impacts of biological fluxes in the ocean on the CO 2 concentration of the atmosphere, and to discuss ways in which biological fluxes might respond to past and future changes in climate and the chemistry of the oceans, such as ocean acidification. The intensities of these interactions will determine the strength, and the sign, of any carbon cycle feedback from the ocean to Earth's climate." @default.
