- W12500741 abstract "As human activity changes at an increasing rate and the growing human population encroaches on the remainder of available land on earth, new pathogens are increasingly encountered. Travel of potentially viremic humans and transport of reservoirs and vectors move dangerous viruses to new geographic areas. Some of these pathogens find receptive homes because of ecological alterations, human activity, and the development of particularly susceptible populations such as the immunosuppressed or monocultures of hosts. This chapter deals with these challenges and antiviral therapy assumes even more importance in the struggle. Four families contain viruses that cause the viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHF) syndrome. They are all RNA viruses with lipid envelopes but have different replication strategies. They are often aerosol hazards, making them dangerous in the laboratory and also potential biological warfare agents. These diseases can be suspected by the travel history of the subject, the incubation period, and specific epidemiologic risk factors for each disease. Pulmonary involvement is the rule in hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), and is the main presenting symptom although accompanied by myocardial depression and shock." @default.
