- W1250505793 abstract "Healing Logics: Culture and in Modern Health Belief Systems. Edited by Erika Brady. (Logan: Utah State University Press, 2001. Pp. vii + 286, prologue, introduction, bibliography, index. $39.95 cloth, $21.95 paper) This anthology addresses interactions between establishment health systems and alternative health systems-variously cooperative, complementary, and conflicting-and it examines some of the issues that arise as outcomes of such interactions. Its ten essays, arranged in five thematically connected pairs, achieve a balance between breadth and depth in exploring the diversity of healing and wellness systems. The volume appears to have been designed for an audience of non-folklorists and as such is likely to succeed, for it is sure to be found useful to a broad readership that includes social researchers, mainstream and alternative practitioners, and policy setters. The editor's introductory essay acquaints readers with the need for study of this subject. It has not been adequately studied, even though practitioners and theorists alike are aware of the interaction it addresses; the medical establishment is discovering that consumers spend billions of dollars on alternative (not mainstream) health care; and, most seriously, patients who participate in mainstream medicine often rely simultaneously on alternative systems without informing their establishment caregivers, with potentially disastrous consequences to everyone concerned. Paired with Bonnie B. O'Connor and David J. Hufford's Understanding Folk Medicine (which offers valuable basic information such as a definition of folklore and descriptions of folk medicine concepts, characteristics, and perspectives), the book's introduction helps dismantle the formal/informal and official/unofficial dichotomies that in the past have often precluded meaningful discussion between medical practitioners and folklorists. The next pair of essays provides valuable insights into two areas of folk medicine likely to be unknown to or misunderstood by mainstream practitioners: urban Latino (Invisible Hospitals: Botanicas in Ethnic Healthcare, by Michael Owen Jones and Patrick A. Polk, with Ysamur Flores-Pena and Roberta J. Evanchuk) and rural Appalachian (The Poor Man's Bag: The Empirical Folk Remedies of Tillman Waggoner, by Richard Blaustein, Anthony Cavender, andjackie Sluder, with Tillman Waggoner). The first article in the next pair, Shelley R. Adler's Integrating Personal Health Systems: Patient- Practitioner Communication, is particularly meaningful to me because of my experience in 1990-91 as a National Institutes of Health (NIH) experimental subject who had been diagnosed with a serious communicable disease. In hopes of being cured, beyond participating in this toxicology-based protocol, at home I independently put into practice certain holistic wellness principles involving fairly strenuous weight-bearing exercise and a program of judicious weight loss. When I told my NIH health-care practitioners about my home regimen, some of them showed such hostility toward holistic medicine that I learned not to speak with them about it, despite my knowledge that a controlled experiment could be compromised by such variables. …" @default.
