- W12554039 abstract "Introduction West Virginia State College (WVSC), located in Institute, a suburb of Charleston, the State capital, is the largest institution of higher education in the Kanawha Valley and serves as a major resource center for this metropolitan area. The College provides a large spectrum of undergraduate degree programs, both baccalaureate and associate, for residential and commuting students and offers a comprehensive schedule of classes to an exceptionally large population of evening students (Bulletin, 1997). Founded in 1891, West Virginia State College attained national prominence as an institution for higher education for blacks, and among other specialties, it continues to serve as a center of black culture. Voluntary desegregation in 1954 created a distinctive living laboratory of human relations, attracting a racially and culturally diverse student body, faculty, and staff. The college cherishes its unique history and its reputation for safeguarding academic freedom, for being innovative in its scholastic programs, and for removing barriers to education and providing leadership for women, minorities, and the disabled. Today, with an enrollment of nearly 5,000 students, the college continues to be known as a model for human relations with a student body of about 88% white; 1 1.5% black; and .5% Hispanic, Asian and other (Bulletin, 1997). West Virginia State College has had a special interest in international understanding and relationships since the 1920s. Although the college enjoyed a number of initiatives early on, 1953 marked the start of an era of increased international enrichment with the appointment of a foreign student program director. The program flourished over the next two decades under the director's leadership until her departure in 1973, at which time international initiatives at the college gradually decreased (Withrow, 1991). Efforts of the college have intensified over the last seven years in acknowledgment of its role in the social and economic development of the Greater Kanawha Valley, and as the only state supported undergraduate institution in the metropolitan Charleston area. For example, since 1991 twenty-five international faculty have been added, the modern foreign language offerings have expanded, and students from the Caribbean, Gambia, South Africa, Liberia, Nigeria, Russia, Korea, and Brazil have joined the campus. These numbers, although modest, are the first steps toward creating a greater awareness of a rapidly changing global community and internationalizing campus life for and among the student body of mostly white, first generation college commuter students, and the on-campus residents of African Americans and other minority Listed in the 1997-2000 Strategic Plan, entitled, Fulfilling the Mission, is the need to increase global awareness among faculty and students. During the last five years faculty, staff, and student organizations have worked to carry out individually designed programs of intercultural and international awareness for the campus body and the community-at-large. Some faculty members have developed/introduced courses and have shared their experiences through participation in faculty development seminars, workshops and conferences provided by the West Virginia Consortium for Faculty and Course Development in International Studies (FACDIS). An informal Faculty International Advisory Committee (FIAC) was organized a few years ago to begin the work of coordinating an international curriculum. In the spring semester of 1997, the President of the college requested a formal Ad Hoc Committee on Global Awareness to which a number of faculty members and administrators readily volunteered. The Faculty Senate President assigned a senate liaison member to be the conduit through which the committee would report back to the senate and ultimately the President of the college.
