- W125964144 abstract "about ideal societies that had haunted humanity since time of Plato's Republic. Thomas More, because he considered his dream society unrealizable, in 1516 called it Utopia and this nowhere, or rather, nowhere outside of books, was locus of many imaginary societies that followed More's. The new literary genre gave free rein to imagination of a science fiction writer like Swift, with his Lilliputians and Brobdingnagians and Yahoos, but it also challenged a philosopher like Campanella who, in his Civitas solis (1620), tried to outline a type of community that could well be called socialistic. Indeed, even in Thomas More's own Utopia, as described by traveler Hythloday (talker of nonsense), we see contours of what would equally deserve name of Eutopia the good land. Right from beginning, then, term utopian has been associated with ideal political and social conditions, even though we still use term also of impractically ideal projects or schemes for social welfare (OED). A man of Renaissance, Sir Thomas More is naturally tolerant in matters of religion, which play a more central role in other utopias. Johann Valentin Andreae, repelled equally by horrors of Thirty Years War and sterility of contemporary Lutheran orthodoxy, hoped in a Utopian Christian City to see a revival of childlike simplicity and devotion. His Reipublicae Christianopolitanae descriptio (1619) was of some importance for development of pietism in Germany and hence for fundamentalism that inspired much early emigration to America from Scandinavia." @default.
