- W1260011 abstract "Interest in the role of sound in fishing prompted a number of European fishery scientists in the 1960s to re-examine the hearing abilities of fishes. Earlier studies had shown great variability in the sensitivity of fish to sounds, as a result of the poor acoustical conditions in small laboratory fish tanks. Workers in Norway, the Netherlands, and Scotland decided independently to carry out hearing experiments in larger bodies of water, including the sea. Hearing thresholds for key fishes were determined under conditions in which sounds could be measured properly. Fishes with swim bladders, such as the cod and haddock, proved to be more sensitive to sounds than those without, such as the plaice and dab. The masking effects of background noise were investigated. Discrimination by fish of sounds from different directions and distances was confirmed, and models were developed to explain these abilities. Together these experiments established the fundamental features of hearing in fishes. There is now renewed concern about the impact of man-made noise on the lives of fishes. If we are to make further progress, then rigorous quantitative acoustic measurements are again required. Those early experiments in the sea set standards that should be followed." @default.
