- W126411322 abstract "Nissim Aloni is the only Israeli playwright so far to have succeeded in defining the Israeli cultural self by means of a strongly-realised image not of Jewish or Israeli origin. The one extreme in Hebrew drama has been its parochialism, devoid of an intellectual argument that transcends the local and temporal; the other extreme is Aloni whose intellectual canvas is dazzingly extensive. Born in 1926, Aloni is chronologically a member of the Palmah or dor baaretz (generation in Israel), those writers born in the 1920s and producing most of their literature in the 1950s, much of it a response to the War of Independence. Philosophically, Aloni is widely divergent from their cultural ideology although he was responsible for occasional outbursts that harmonised with the prevailing postwar mood in Israel of the 1950s. In common with some of the most prominent spokesmen of his generation, he voiced the problems associated with the transition from war to independence. Because of his references to the iwiyyut (Hebrewness) of Israel, he was associated by some with the Canaanite movement which touched most of his contemporary writers without their formal adoption of its ideology.1 Yet Aloni has uniquely succeeded in elevating local and parochial Israeli concerns to the level of myth and he therefore achieves for the Hebrew theatre the universalism long demanded by the dramatic critics. Topics associated with tragedy, which recur in his plays, are one manifestation of this universalism: the killing of the father by the son, the death of kings, the figure of a clownish, weak or grotesque king, the search for a killer, nostalgia for a glorious past.
