- W126539488 abstract "As a continuation of the faunistic inventory of the Middle Atlas (Morocco) dung beetles, we expose the results of the paracoprid functional group. For the 25 recorded species the influence of season, habitat and elevation on faunistic composition and species richness was assessed. The biogeographic composition of this assemblage was also analyzed by examining the comparative relevance of this functional dung beetle group in the study area. Finally, the main ecological and biogeographical characteristics of each species are described. Our results show that the Middle Atlas paracoprid dung beetle assemblages har- bour more than half part of the Scarabaeidae species and almost a third part of the Geotrupidae species inhabiting Morocco, and that these species have generally higher populations during the spring and in the pasturelands. Forest habitats and autumn assemblages only possess higher populations in the case of some Geotrupidae species, a family characterized by its general cold-temperate adaptations. With regard to the altitudinal segregation, only five species have a negative and significant correla- tion between altitude and abundance showing a preference for those surveyed localities located a lower altitudes. Only a spe- cies (Thorectes armifrons) seem to prefer the high altitudinal places. We suggest that the species richness and compositional variations are mainly due to the climatic variations related with the seasonality and elevation change, but less with the modifica- tion i n the type of habitat. The Morocco paracoprid dung beetle fauna seems to be less diverse than the one existent in the Ibe- rian Peninsula due probable to the lack of species with cool-temperate adaptations and Palaearctic or Eurosiberian distribu- tions. We suggest that the recent isolation of these assemblages of the rest of Palaearctic from the Pliocene exercised a nota-" @default.
