- W126586722 abstract "Distance education will enable postsecondary educators to serve a growing number of adult learners by reaching outside the physical boundaries of college campuses. This alternative delivery mode is especially important to educators of the 21st century because baby boomers are returning to academic institutions in increasing numbers to refresh or enhance their knowledge base and skills. They are preparing themselves for career changes or are learning for the pure pleasure of new knowledge. These mature learners have different characteristics, tendencies and goals than their younger counterparts and are different from themselves at an earlier stage in their lives. Many of these distinctions are driven by changed life obligations and learning expectations. Over the past 20 years this large group of learners has matured, and technology and the capabilities it affords have also changed. Today's communications technologies -- including the Internet, audiographics, videoconferencing and computer-based training -- allow institutions of higher education to reach people in a variety of environments such as businesses, colleges, hospitals and even private homes. Distance learning programs of various types are available through more than 1,000 educational institutions in the United States.[1] Estimates are that by the year 2007 almost 50 percent of all learners enrolled in postsecondary education courses will take some of their courses through distance education delivery formats.[2] The purposes of this paper are to examine some of the characteristics and needs of adult learners contrasted with traditionally aged learners in colleges and universities, and to consider distance education as a vehicle to meet the needs of adult learners. A case study centered on human resource development classes and adult distance learners who participated in those courses via videoconferencing demonstrates some of the outcomes and unique educational opportunities inherent with the integration of different communications technologies. Adults as Learners Adult learners have become an important component of today's college population. The Digest of Educational Statistics reported that by the year 2001 more than 15 million adults are expected to be enrolled either full- or part-time in higher education.[3] While adult learners are a significant and growing segment of postsecondary education, some of their characteristics and needs are often distinct from traditionally aged college students. Almost by definition, the adult learner is a person who returns to study, on a full-time or part-time basis, after a period of time spent in other life activities or pursuits. As a result, he or she brings a rich background of life and work experiences to the classroom. This background includes the wide range of roles that adults fill: employee, spouse, parent, citizen, and community or church worker. In general, adults have more sophisticated insights that result from their employment, from the skills they have acquired, from their broader life experiences and from the relationships they have developed with other people. Unlike younger learners, older, more experienced students find it easier to recognize how ideas can be transformed into action and how theory can be transformed into practice outside the classroom. For these reasons they tend to appreciate direct application of concepts and the addition of real world perspectives into their learning experience. Another way in which adult learners differ from younger learners is that their goals are often more clear-cut. That is, adult learners are more likely to clearly identify the things that are most important in their lives, such as the careers to which they want to devote their energies, the skills they wish to acquire, the persons they aspire to become, or the kinds of relationships they hope to build. Adult learners are also more likely to prioritize the forces competing for their attention. …" @default.
