- W12683443 abstract "In the Maekawa River catchment on the eastern slope of Mt Norikura-dake, the water balance and mass balance of geochemicals were examined for four years. We have examined whether it is possible to explain the underestimation of precipitation amount by the elevation effect on precipitation amount and the relationship between winter monsoon and topography. In the catchment the precipitation frequency is high from the rainy season to the autumn. The base flow discharge becomes largest in the spring snowmelt season. The pH and electric conductivity of stream water decline rapidly with the beginning of the snowmelt runoff. When the discharge temporarily increases in the rainy season or at a typhoon event, the pH and electric conductivity of stream water temporarily decline. The Cl - concentration of stream water increases in the early stage of the snowmelt season. In addition, the NO 3 - concentration of stream water increases when the rainfall increases discharge. The major ion concentration of stream water, except Cl - and NO 3 - , almost synchronizes with the change of electrical conductivity. In the mass balance of the cations, the runoff rate from the catchment considerably exceeds the atmospheric deposition rate to the catchment. This is because there is an extremely high elution of ions from rock and soil, which are composed by the new volcanic structure. Further, the atmospheric deposition rate of NO 3 - ions is larger in the catchment than the runoff rate from the catchment due to biological consumption." @default.
