- W1273293735 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on pneumococcal polysaccharides. The pneumococci are ovoid, nonmotile, nonsporing organisms that usually occur in pairs enveloped by a capsule. The capsule is the most striking morphologic feature of the organism and is most voluminous when the organism is at its most virulent stage. Pneumococci are generally Gram-positive, although, and in older cultures, Gram-negative cells are frequently encountered. Pneumococcal pneumonia is rarely a primary infection of the lung, but factors, such as damage to the respiratory tract, fatigue, chilling of the body, and general debilitation, predispose to infection. The pneumococci that become invasive are acquired by inhalation or are already present in the pharynx; the first circumstance indicates that pneumonia may be a contagious disease contracted from carriers, and the second, that it may arise as an autogenous infection. Pneumococcus was one of the first species to be subdivided into types by immunological techniques, and the knowledge of the relationship between structure and antigenicity was enhanced by the chemical investigations of the various types." @default.
