- W127969832 abstract "[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] A new symposium series aims to provide a forum for dialogue across different interest groups of the languages field as a basis for considering a viable, encompassing language education policy and to position the languages community to address the important development of a national curriculum, as Anne-Marie Morgan reports. In December 2008 the Research Centre for Languages and Cultures (RCLC) at the University of South Australia (UniSA) hosted the first of what will be annual symposia. Participants included key academics and industry partners in languages education from across the nation. Responding to renewed political and media attention on languages education issues and changing sociopolitical and educational contexts for education, the symposium examined the current state, nature, role, and purposes of languages in Australian education. The aim of the symposium was to provide a forum for dialogue across different interest groups of the languages field as a basis for considering a viable, encompassing language education policy; and, to position the languages community to address the important development of a national curriculum. Four specific focus areas were addressed in the symposium: 1 the current state of policy and participation in languages education and languages teacher education 2 engaging with diversity 3 current orientations to languages education 4 future possibilities and directions in languages education. The first focus area was guided by discussant Joseph Io Bianco, and included contributions from Tony Liddicoat, Tim Curnow, Richard Baldauf, and Lindy Norris, who presented papers on the current state and nature of languages education, participation in the schools and tertiary sector, and the nature of languages teacher education. The presentations showed that languages are in a fragile state at all levels of Australian education and that languages policy over the last decade or more has not had the anticipated impact on languages education, especially at higher levels. Contributors in the second focus area were Joseph Io Bianco, Giancarlo Chiro and Andrew Scrimgeour whose papers addressed the issues of the diversity of learners, multiculturalism and languages learning, and the complexity of linguistic and cultural backgrounds of teachers and learners of Chinese. These papers showed that the linguistic and cultural diversity of Australia has particular implications for the way languages are taught; that one of the key objectives of languages education is to recognise, maintain and enhance that linguistic and cultural diversity. …" @default.
