- W128036041 abstract "The term hypertensive encephalopathy was introduced by Oppenheimer and Fishberg 1 in 1928 to designate a constellation of neurologic symptoms that punctuate the course of severe hypertension. Hypertensive encephalopathy is currently defined as an acute syndrome characterized by elevated blood pressure associated with rapidly progressive signs and symptoms, including headache, seizures, altered mental status, visual disturbances, and other focal or diffuse neurologic signs. Its pathogenesis is still incompletely understood, although it seems to be related to breakthrough of autoregulation and endothelial dysfunction leading to cerebral edema. Recognition of this condition is important, because prompt control of blood pressure will usually cause reversal of the syndrome. If untreated, increasing intracranial pressure can be fatal." @default.
