Er hatte Mitte der 30er Jahre vergeblich versucht, sich in Deutschland für dieses Fach zu habilitieren, und mußte dann in die Schweiz gehen, wo er 1938 in Zürich habilitiert wurde. Wer in den 50er Jahren in Köln Soziologie studierte, lernte König als einen Vertreter einer reinen Soziologie kennen, einer Soziologie, die, wie er sagte, „nichts als Soziologie“, das heißt positive Sozialwissenschaft sein sollte (König 1958: 7).
