- W128575240 abstract "This essay is not written to praise difficult writing or to advocate a clearer, gentler style of writing. But before exploring those borders, it will be useful to map out the terrain broadly. Both teachers and students often find their reading difficult; they read texts located at the borders of their competencies. Sometimes they even read those texts together. As a profession, we seldom think much about difficulty: it is an obstacle, something to be gotten over, and we focus on the tools that will get us past our problems?background knowledge, specialized vocabularies?rather than on the experience of difficulty itself. We usually remark on difficulty to complain about it: it would be strange to say that a text is nice and hard, or just difficult enough, although perhaps we should. Especially in nonacademic settings, a difficult text can be abandoned; if we need the information it contains, we" @default.
