- W128732830 abstract "The characterization of gamagrass accessions for agronomic traits and their subsequent use in the development of superior cultivars is both feasible and practical. Elucidation of the various reproductive mechanisms found in apomictic eastern gamagrass has allowed us to develop several scenarios for breeding strategies directed toward commercial seed production. Eastern gamagrass is distantly related to maize, which is the most efficient grain producer of all the grasses and the world's most important grain crop. Recent cultural advances in seed production are primarily concerned with agronomic practices that favor the growth of the crop, eastern gamagrass, through reduction of competition (weeds, insects, and others) and improved fertility practices. Seed production problems will be different from area to area and are best handled on a local level. Eastern gamagrass seed maturity is indeterminate with seed shattering from the inflorescence as they mature." @default.
