- W128981085 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on the role of noninvasive imaging modalities, including noncontrast computed tomography (NCCT), magnetic resonance urography (MRU), and combined plain abdominal X-ray (KUB) and abdominal gray-scale ultrasonography (US), in the diagnosis of the cause of ureteral obstruction in patients with renal impairment. The diagnostic accuracy, advantages, and limitations of each imaging modality are discussed with a special emphasis on imaging of ureteral obstruction due to malignant disorders. KUB alone is not sufficient to diagnose stone disease, giving a sensitivity of 45-59%. Apart from urolithiasis, KUB has almost no role in the diagnosis of other causes of ureteric obstruction. Gray-scale US has many advantages in the diagnosis of obstructive uropathy. It is noninvasive, quick, portable, repeatable, and inexpensive, and it does not use ionizing radiation or contrast materials. NCCT gives a sensitivity of 98% and a specificity of 100% and carries several advantages, including no use of contrast materials and time saving because the procedure requires only 5 minutes. The ability to diagnose a wide range of disease entities that result in obstructive uropathy is an advantage of NCCT. T2-weighted MRU is an option in patients who have contrast allergy because it does not require the administration of any gadolinium. It also eliminates the need for costly nonionic-iodinated compounds or prophylaxis against an allergic reaction with steroids." @default.
