- W129020495 abstract "In this paper I explore how Gestalt therapy theory and practice can inform the work of organisation development consultants. The increasing emphasis on the relationship itself as a means for growth and development, neatly captured in Yalom's phrase 'It is the relationship that heals', is linked with the Gestalt concept of dialogic relations. I will postulate that Gestalt and existential therapy theory have many lessons for the related world of organisational development (OD) consulting. I paraphrase Yalom, 'It is the relationship that helps'. While the primary task of counsellors is therapy and that of consultants is client task effectiveness, the role of relationship is common. Contactful dialogic relations with clients are helpful in themselves and are necessary for task effectiveness and implementing change. Existential OD consultants use their being and becoming processes in the interests of the client and also themselves. Thus, I find existentialism and Gestalt therapy theory inform consultants' practice. The paper is structured under the following headings: Introduction A parable (illustrative case) The existential platform (philosophy) Gestalt therapy theory: a means to existential ends (derivative theory) Existential organisation development consulting (application) Conclusion." @default.
